Cocoon “Womb”
This installation promotes the concept of the critical view into the aspect of our interactions with nature and the consequences that derive from human actions. This installation has two components: one being the experience being inside of the cocoon and one interacting with the sound and lights. The piece explores the notions of controlling a person’s experience by creating sounds the person being controlled can only hear. This acts as a metaphor of not knowing how your actions can impact others.
With the cocoon “womb”, I created an interactive installation that records the sounds of people voices of the critique room and enable for people to interact and manipulate the recorded sounds. The manipulated sounds are sent to the inside of the cocoon where people who are inside will only be able to hear the sound that has been manipulated. Running down the spine of the cocoon pod there are lights that flash to the beat of the manipulated sounds. These lights represent the “life” of the cocoon. I chose yellow as the light colour because it is known as, “a colour of enthusiasm for life and that can awaken greater confidence and optimism.” The colour also represents, as being the “great communicator” and helps people “look at both sides before making a decision.” Lastly, yellow is related to the ego and our sense of self worth, to how we feel about ourselves and how we are perceived by others. Using this colour, I hope it can empower and help our psyche come to those understanding and feeling within my installation. Furthermore, the only reference that the people who are manipulating the sound will have will be the flashing of the lights. This represents how embryos in the wombs can hear abstract sounds of the outside world that are influenced and controlled by people. This illustrates how people who are blinded by their actions by their destructive practices to the world can victimize embryos. This being a metaphor for the destructions of nature by mankind.
